Allo Client Device: Hardware Setup and Daily-Use Guide
Learn how the Allo client device works, understand its buttons and display, and get daily-use tips to keep it ready for any deployment.
The Allo client device is a compact radio unit that you carry during exercises, emergency deployments, or pilot operations. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and relays messages across the Allo radio mesh, enabling off-grid text communication even when mobile networks, Wi-Fi, and internet are completely unavailable.
The Allo client device does not require an internet connection or a SIM card to send or receive messages. All communication happens over a local radio mesh between Allo devices and repeaters.
Overview
The device is designed to be simple and robust. You interact with it primarily through the Allo app on your phone — the device itself handles the radio transmission in the background. A small status display and physical buttons let you check the device state and restart it without needing your phone.
Key physical features:
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Antenna | Removable SMA screw-on antenna at the top |
| Display | Small status screen showing battery, connection, and radio state |
| Charging port | USB-C on the bottom edge |
How It Works
The client device acts as a radio bridge between your phone and the Allo mesh network. When you send a message in the Allo app, the app passes it to the device over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The device then transmits that message over radio to other Allo devices or repeaters within range. Replies and incoming messages travel back the same way — over radio to your device, and then via Bluetooth to your phone.
Open the Allo app
Launch the app on your Android or iOS phone. The app automatically searches for nearby Allo devices via Bluetooth.
Power on the client device
Press the power button briefly. The display shows a startup screen and then the device name and pairing PIN.
Select your device in the app
The app lists nearby devices by their Bluetooth name. Tap your device to begin pairing.
Enter the PIN
Type the PIN shown on the device display. Your phone and device are now paired and ready to send messages.
Only one phone can be connected to a client device at a time. If another person is already connected, ask them to disconnect first.
Buttons
The physical buttons on the front of the device handle all on-device controls. The exact button layout depends on your hardware version — refer to the label on your device or ask your administrator.
General button functions include:
- Wake the display — press once to light up the screen and check the current status
- Step through status screens — press to cycle forward or backward through the available information screens
- Power on or restart — a short press on the power button starts the device
- Hibernate / power off — navigate to the hibernate screen and hold the appropriate button to power down
The display turns off automatically after a short period to save battery. This is normal — press the wake button to view the status again.
Status Display
The small display gives you a quick overview of what the device is doing without opening the app. Depending on the firmware version, the display can show:
- Device name — the name assigned to this device (e.g.
Noodsteunpunt Dorpstraat) - Pairing PIN — used to connect the device with a phone
- Battery level — how much charge remains
- Bluetooth connection status — whether a phone is currently connected
- Radio / mesh status — whether the device is actively communicating on the mesh
- Network activity — last send or receive event
- Error or warning messages — if something needs attention
Antenna
The antenna screws onto the SMA connector at the top of the device. It is critical for radio performance — transmitting without an antenna can damage the device.
- Always ensure the antenna is attached before powering on.
- Hand-tighten only; do not use tools.
- Do not bend the antenna unnecessarily.
- Keep the antenna away from large metal surfaces and heavy electrical equipment.
- Point the antenna upward and keep it clear of obstructions for the best range.
Daily-Use Tips
Check before deployment
Verify the battery is fully charged and the antenna is securely attached before any exercise or emergency response.
Keep Bluetooth enabled
Disable power-saving mode on your phone. It can prevent the Allo app from maintaining a stable Bluetooth connection.
Position for range
Hold or place the device upright with the antenna pointing up. Avoid pockets that press the antenna against your body.
Charge regularly
Connect the device to USB-C power whenever you have the opportunity — especially during long deployments.
Care and Maintenance
The device requires minimal maintenance, but a few habits will keep it reliable:
- Charge it regularly and never store it with a completely flat battery for extended periods.
- Check that the antenna is tight before each deployment.
- Wipe the housing with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use harsh cleaning products.
- Do not insert metal objects into the USB-C port.
- Store it dry, away from direct sunlight, and at room temperature.
- Do not expose it to heavy impacts, water, or extreme temperatures.
The device is not waterproof. Protect it from rain, mud, and submersion. Do not leave it in a hot vehicle.
